Alexandria was founded in 1749 by Scottish immigrants named John Carlyle and William. They sent a petition to the Virginia House of Burgesses to establish a town called Alexandria, which was named in honor of the Alexander family.


In the past, Alexandria was a tobacco trading post and was one of the ten busiest ports in America. It was part of the District of Columbia and home to both the largest slave-trading firm in the country, as well as a large free-black community.


During the civil war, it became the supply center for Union troops and a street-car suburb for federal workers.
